To configure a modem for a dial-up connection

1. Open Network Connections.
2. Right-click the dial-up connection you want to configure, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab, under Connect using, click the modem you want to configure, and then click Configure.
4. Under Hardware Features, select the check box options you want to enable.
5. If you want to enable the modem speaker, select the Enable modem speaker check box.

• To ensure compatibility, you need to use the same kind of modem as the one connected to the remote access server, select the same initial speed, and enable the same features. If you do not select the same model, at least select a modem with the same ITU-T standard as the modem on the server.
• Selecting a feature that is not supported by your modem has no effect on its performance.
• Network Connections automatically configures connections according to the devices that are available. For example, you might use a laptop and docking station when you are in the office, with your connection configured to use the docking station modem. When you are on the road, and the docking station modem is not available, the connection is automatically configured to use the laptop's PCMCIA modem. When you return to the office and re-dock your laptop into its docking station, Network Connections detects that the docking station modem is available again, and automatically reconfigures the connection to use the docking station modem.
• Modem changes made as described in this procedure are unique to this connection. To make global changes, you will need to change each modem.
